FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDRENS DENTAL HEALTH MONTH (NCDNM)!
The slogan for NCDHM 2022 is: “Sealants Make Sense.” City Kids Dental approves!
WHAT ARE SEALANTS?
Sealants are an excellent preventive dentistry procedure for children’s teeth which protects teeth from tooth decay. The chewing surfaces of the molar and premolar teeth have grooves and fissures that make them vulnerable to decay. These fissures can be deep and difficult to clean and narrower than even a single bristle of a tooth brush. Sealants prevent cavities by stopping food and bacteria from sticking into the grooves on molars and creating a smooth surface for simple cleaning.
HOW ARE THEY PLACED?
Sealants are simple to place! There is no numbing involved. The sealant is flowed into the tooth grooves as a liquid which is hardened by a dental curing light. This fast, painless procedure is one of the most cost-effective means of preventing cavities. ADA studies show they can reduce your chance for cavities by up to 80%.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL SEALANTS?
Children and teenagers who are likely to develop decay in the grooves of the premolars and molars are candidates for sealants. Adults without decay or dental fillings in their molars may also benefit from sealants.
In additions to sealants, we cannot stress enough the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, oral hygiene routines at home and regular visits for dental cleanings and exams for optimal oral health.
